For the past year, Doris and I have been on an epic quest to discover the most sensational corned beef and pastrami sandwich. After rigorous polls and sifting through countless recommendations, our journey led us to Pomperdale in Fort Lauderdale—a spot renowned for dishing out the finest hot corned beef and pastrami in all of Florida.
Approaching Pomperdale, the ambiance instantly transported us to a classic storefront on Dekalb Avenue in Brooklyn (NYC). Stepping inside, we were enveloped in the authentic sights and aromas of a genuine New York Deli. Many claim to be New York-style, but Pomperdale – Truly Embodies the Essence of a “New York Deli.”
Our lunch orders were no less than legendary. The Bronx Bomber, a tantalizing mix of cold cuts and flavors, was an absolute delight. The freshness of the ingredients and the symphony of flavors were unparalleled, rivaling a local favorite from our Sandwich Shop Series. (Yes, we’re looking at you, Dominic!)
Now, onto the Star of the Show – The New Yorker. With lofty expectations set by recommendations, the First Bite shattered any doubt. Pomperdale not only met but soared above expectations. Labeling them as the Best in South Florida feels like an UNDERStatement—they Reign Supreme as the Ultimate Pastrami and Corned Beef Champions in the entire state, comparable to the best that New York City has to offer. The Deli Guy and Gal evoke the essence of New York City—a true taste of home.
In conversation with the owner, it became clear that Pomperdale holds true to old-school methods. They craft their matzo ball soup in-house and meticulously pickle and cure their Meats. Each ingredient, down to the USDA choice meats and hand-selected smoked fish from New York, is chosen with utmost care. Hand-sliced fish, prepared daily by Certified Master Slicers, ensures a silky, sumptuous texture.
Their menu is a Love Letter to traditional Eastern European fare, from Blintzes to Stuffed Cabbage and Latkes, along with contemporary delights like Solid White Loin Tuna and Dill Chicken Salad. Pomperdale Famous New York Deli is a Local Institution, catering to northern transplants and lovers of Eastern European Cuisine for over five decades.
