7 Mile Grill: Still Hooked After All These Years!(A SoFloDining Revisit)

Alright, food fanatics, buckle up! Your favorite food-obsessed duo, Doris and yours truly, have just returned from a pilgrimage to a Keys institution – the legendary 7 Mile Grill at 1240 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL 33050! And let me tell you, folks, this place still delivers that classic, sun-kissed Keys vibe that keeps us coming back for more.

Now, let’s rewind a few years. About FIVE YEARS ago, we stumbled upon 7 Mile Grill at the enthusiastic recommendation of a friendly fella at the Tropical Everglades Visitor Association. And boy, were we glad we listened! That first visit? Pure magic. We’re talking Blackened Grouper and Blackened Mahi Mahi sandwiches that practically MELTED in our mouths. Seriously, I was practically inhaling them! The fish was cooked to perfection, seasoned just right, and bursting with that fresh-from-the-sea flavor. I swear, it converted me, a non-fish-eater, into a true believer! And the homemade Key Lime Pie? Oh! My! Goodness! Forget everything you think you know about Key Lime Pie! This wasn’t overly sweet, wasn’t overly tart, just perfectly balanced with a graham cracker crust that sang with every bite.

This time around, we started with an order of their iconic Conch Fritters. And let me tell you, these weren’t just fritters; they were works of art. Deep golden brown on the outside, unbelievably soft and flavorful on the inside. Each bite was a symphony of textures and tastes, and you could practically taste the freshness of every ingredient. This is the kind of attention to detail that separates the good from the GREAT.

We followed that up with a simple, yet satisfying, basket of fried shrimp. Perfection, people! Perfectly golden-brown, plump, and juicy shrimp, which were served with crispy, fresh-cut fries. And to wash it all down? Two ice-cold, gigantic root beers. Pure bliss.

But the real magic of 7 Mile Grill doesn’t end there! Make sure you save room (and you WILL want to!) because just a stone’s throw away, you’ll find Shiver Me Timbers, their phenomenal ice cream shop (open 2 PM – 10 PM daily). Because what’s a Keys dining experience without something sweet to top it off?

7 Mile Grill has been serving fresh seafood and good times since 1954, and it’s clear they haven’t lost their touch. This cozy, no-frills, dockside gem, nestled next to a marina, exudes that quintessential Keys charm. The atmosphere is relaxed, the views are stunning, and the service is always spot-on. They even offer jet ski rentals AND a “hook and cook” option! Seriously, what more could you ask for?

Now, let’s talk about the legendary Key Lime Pie that’s made in-house! We were so stuffed from our recent feast that we sadly couldn’t indulge, but it will be a priority on our next visit! Doris says we will start with it, first, just to make sure we get to have it. Sounds like a solid plan.  Believe me, you don’t want to miss it.

SoFloDining Verdict: 7 Mile Grill is still a MUST-STOP! This spot has truly earned its spot in my top five must-visit locations when cruising through the Keys. Whether you’re a seasoned Keys veteran or a first-timer, 7 Mile Grill is a classic you must visit.
