How many restaurants do you need to take a boat to get to? Your journey into Florida’s past begins with a scenic boat ride from the parking area to the island, where the captain provides a brief, engaging history of this legendary location.

A Legacy Since 1928

As you arrive and walk along the dock, the history of the property is palpable. Originally opened in 1928 as “Club Unique,” Cap’s Place is the oldest structure in Lighthouse Point and the oldest restaurant in Broward County. Founded by Eugene Theodore “Cap” Knight, a former rum-runner, and his partner Al Hasis, the establishment was built using Dade County pine atop a beached dredging barge. In 1990, it was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The alluring aromas from the kitchen set the stage, but we highly recommend stopping into the bar first. It’s a living museum where you can enjoy a drink while taking in the vintage photographs and stories lining the walls—remnants of its days as a Prohibition-era speakeasy and gambling den. Upon being seated, our waiter, Ed, greeted us with a basket of warm, fresh bread and expertly guided us through the daily specials and preparation methods.

The Starters: A Perfect Pairing

We began our evening with the Bacon Wrapped Scallops. They were truly exceptional—the bacon was rendered to a perfect crispness while the scallops remained tender, all served over a delicate white sauce that tied the dish together beautifully.

The Entrées: Setting a New Standard

The kitchen at Cap’s Place continues to deliver dishes that are as impressive as the setting itself:

  • Twin Lobster Tails: These were served de-shelled, dredged in rice flour, flash-fried, and topped with a signature Imperial sauce. The result was simply incredible—light, flavorful, and perfectly executed.
  • Crab Cakes: These are, without a doubt, the best I have ever tasted. I previously held a certain famous standard for crab cakes, but Cap’s Place has officially set a new bar for excellence.

The Atmosphere: Old Florida Charm

It is rare to find a destination where every single dish hits the mark, but Cap’s Place comes remarkably close. The service is attentive, and the period-accurate decor transports you to another era. Before you head back, be sure to ask the front desk for the “List of Personalities”—a fascinating look at the famous figures who have visited this island, from Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill to Al Capone and John F. Kennedy.

The Ultimate FOMO moment Cap’s Place is more than just a meal; it is a full-sensory experience. Between the natural Florida landscape, the knowledgeable bartenders, and the high-quality seafood, it offers a polished yet rustic charm that is increasingly rare. This is a must-visit for any discerning diner looking for a true South Florida adventure.
