Doris and I were in the area shooting an episode of our video interview series, “Who’s at the Chef’s Table”. Once we wrapped up the shoot, we decided to stop into Casa Frida, as we were nearby and a little hungry.  We have heard so much about the place over the years and have never had the perfect timing to make the visit. This gave us the perfect opportunity to take in a late lunch, early dinner, slash happy hour, and sample what they truly have to offer.

Having been open in Federal Plaza since 2012, Casa Frida has built a rock-solid reputation for serving the most authentic Mexican food in the Fort Lauderdale area. We have read many articles and many reviews touting their authenticity and flavor; besides, we were eager to experience it firsthand along Federal Highway.

Kicking Things Off: The Margarita Flight

We kicked things off with a custom margarita flight, where you get to choose four of their in-house-made margaritas. We went with the watermelon, passion fruit, tamarindo, and hibiscus. As of this writing, the watermelon flavor is currently their most popular margarita—our bartender shared how she personally blends up a whole fresh watermelon!

We have to tell you that the deliciousness and freshness of these margaritas were completely out of this world. Doris and I could not pick a favorite. I had been pushing for the watermelon, but every time we tasted a different one, they just got better and better.

Appetizers: The Chicken Sope

For our appetizer, we started with something new on the menu: the Chicken Sope, a traditional corn boat sope, topped with tender chicken, beans, queso fresco, and Mexican crema. This was absolute perfection. We weren’t quite sure what to expect, and the description made it sound delicious, but let me tell you—it is even more delicious than it reads! Definitely a stellar appetizer to share for two people, and easily something we will order again on our next visit.

Entrees: Chorizo Melt & Chicken Yucatán

For our entrees, Doris started with the Casa Frida Open-Face Chorizo Melt, featuring a rich refried bean spread, melty cheese, and fresh pico de gallo. This is one of those dishes that once you start eating it, you simply cannot put it down. It was so perfectly balanced in flavor yet wonderfully bountiful on the plate. Doris took half home to enjoy later and tease me with it.

I went with the Chicken Yucatán, made with perfectly seasoned and grilled chicken breast served over a generous bed of black beans and rice, topped with fresh avocado slices. The aroma emanating from the plate was absolutely addictive. From start to finish, I couldn’t stop eating—even if I wanted to take some home, there was no way I was going to leave a single bite on that plate!

Chef Dan’s Note on the Menu & The FOMO Factor

While we thoroughly enjoyed our meal, looking over their menu and traditional offerings sparked some serious culinary FOMO—definitely next time around, I have my eye on many of their traditional items! Whether you are searching for authentic Mexican food, savory tacos, loaded quesadillas, comforting enchiladas, or fresh Mexican cuisine in South Florida and the Fort Lauderdale area, Casa Frida delivers on every front.

Service & Final Verdict

Our service throughout the visit was top-notch. Our server did not miss a beat, ensuring our glasses were full and our plates cleared with a warm smile. We definitely will be coming back for more. We honestly don’t know how we missed Casa Frida after all these years, but now it has firmly earned its spot as our go-to destination for authentic Mexican cuisine in the Fort Lauderdale area.
