Checkers Old München has been around since 1982. To save you the math that’s over 40 years. They have established themselves as one of the places to go if you are looking for Great German Food in the Pompano Beach area. It is highly recommended that you call ahead and make reservations, for this location is always extremely busy. They have recently expanded beyond the two dining rooms and sidewalk seating. I came across them years ago when they were doing a remodel and were temporarily relocated to Lauderdale by the Sea. Once this location was reopened it was so organic for us to visit that we frequently visit with friends and family members on a regular basis.
For our drink, Doris and I both opted for a boot of beer. This is one of those “You Must Experience” for yourself types of things. (See picture below). We started off with a few simple appetizers. The Chicharrones which are Fried Pork Bites with a Cayenne Dip were absolutely out of this world. And an interesting find in a German Restaurant! We also had the Sausage Sampler which consists of Bratwurst, Knockwurst, Chicken, Apples, Peppers, and Cheese. This is a meal within itself.
For our entrees, Doris ordered the Hackbraten, their Homemade Meat Loaf consisting of Seasoned Ground Beef, Pork, and Veal Baked to perfection. I ordered the Black Forest Chicken which consists of Tender Chicken Breast Stuffed with Black Forest Ham, Onions, and Mushroom all topped with a White Wine Cream Sauce. Both dishes were absolutely authentic and super flavorful. The portion sizes were more than adequate as we both took food home.
For dessert, we shared the Homemade Baked Apple Strudel which is served warm with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with caramel syrup, cinnamon, and powdered sugar. This made-with-love dessert is another hit and probably the reason that they have been around for so long even though they had been relocated for a time.
I must reiterate and can’t say it enough, please, make reservations.
