If you find yourself near the Fort Lauderdale-Broward County Convention Center, prepping for a cruise at Port Everglades, or just landing at FLL, you are in luck. You are less than 10 minutes away from a restaurant that has been systematically sweeping “Best Burger” awards for over 15 years.
Located in the Harbor Shops, Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill is a family-run clinic in hospitality and high-quality comfort food.
A Legacy of Excellence
Doris and I were first introduced to Gilbert’s by the Vegan Homeboy, who brought us in to shoot content announcing their vegan options. Since then, we’ve become such regulars that we’ve brought family, friends, including our Wynmoor group here. We even sat down with Chef Corwin for an episode of Who’s at The Chef’s Table with Chef Dan to see how they maintain such high standards year after year.
As it turns out, the experts agree. Gilbert’s has an incredible track record:
- Sun-Sentinel’s “Best Burger in South Florida”: They took the #1 spot in 2010 and reclaimed the title in 2017.
- Southern Living: Named one of the “Best Burger Joints in the South.”
- Miami New Times: Recently crowned them the “Most Legendary Burger Joint in the South.”
- The Burger Beast Stamp of Approval: Sef Gonzalez (Burger Beast) has lauded their “made-to-order” philosophy and the welcoming atmosphere that Richy, Corwin, Beth, and their dedicated staff provide.
The SoFloDining “Must-Tries”
- Chef Dan’s Favorite — The Demi Burger: This is Dan’s top pick for a reason. It is a rich, savory experience that stands out even among their award-winning lineup.
- The Havarti Burger: Topped with creamy Havarti and served on a toasted garlic English muffin, it’s the burger that changed the game in Broward County.
- Doris’Favorite — Panko Breaded Chicken Fingers: Doris is not fond of chicken, but she swears by these! They are crispy, golden, and truly second to none. You haven’t had chicken fingers until you’ve had these.
- The Hottest Burger in South Florida: A legendary challenge for those who crave serious spice.
- Mrs. Gilbert’s Desserts: Lenore’s homemade Key Lime Pie and Cheesecake are the only way to end your meal.
The “Consistency” Factor
While they won the official Sun-Sentinel title in 2010 and 2017, Gilbert’s has been a “Finalist” or “Top 3” nearly every year they’ve been in business. Most recently, their 2024–2025 accolades from Southern Living and Miami New Times have surpassed local polls, labeling them “Legendary” on a National level.
SoFloDining Tip: Always check the Daily Blackboard Specials. Whether it’s Pan Seared Tuna or Chinese Roast Pork on Garlic Toast, Chef Corwin and the team are always creating something unique that isn’t on the standard menu!
