During our recent Keys escapade, Doris and I just had to check out Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill. All the hype we’ve been hearing made it a must-visit spot. From the get-go, that unmistakable Keys vibe welcomed us. Choosing a chill waterside table next to Captain Morgan, we got a warm welcome from Alvaro, our server, who gave us some time to check out the menu.
Doris went for the Paloma with Patron Reposado, Sour, Ruby Red—so refreshing and absolutely delightful. I went for the RX, a mix of Bacardi Superior, Havana Club Anejo, Pineapple Juice, Coconut, Orange Juice, and Nutmeg. It was so good that I went for a round two as dessert. Our food journey kicked off with the Shrimp Bisque Fries—an Idaho potato fries delight topped with house-made Shrimp Bisque, Applewood smoked bacon, and scallions. Trying to describe the taste is just OMG-level!
For the main course, both of us went for fish sandwiches. Doris savored the Dolphin Reuben with Local Mahi, 1000 Island dressing, Tropical Mango Slaw, and melted Swiss on freshly toasted rye bread. Another delightful surprise. I opted for the Local Grouper Sandwich, blackened with roasted red pepper mayo and tropical mango coleslaw on a potato bun. Every dish outdid the one before in deliciousness.
Big shoutout to Alvaro, our server, for steering us through our orders and spilling the tea on the history of the spot and the area. Major kudos to the Executive Chef—hats off! Swing by and be sure to drop that SoFloDining mention!
