On our most recent trip down through the Florida Keys, Doris and I stopped in the legendary Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen. Located right on the Overseas Highway, this spot is a true local institution that radiates a classic, Old Florida atmosphere. From the moment you walk in, you’re surrounded by a vibrant collection of license plates from all over the world, giving the space a rustic “Old Florida” feel that makes you feel right at home. It is cozy, full of character, and exactly the kind of roadside gem you hope to find.
Every dish we sampled was an experience. Our server, MaryLinda, was an absolute pro, getting us settled with water and taking our drink orders—a Moscow Mule for Doris and a refreshing Watermelon Boba for me. We started by diving into their chowders, and they were absolutely delicious. I had a cup of the Conch Chowder, while Doris ordered the Special Bacon and Shrimp Chowder. The real standout, though, was that shrimp and bacon chowder; it was next level to the point that I honestly just wanted to drink it.
For our entrees, we shared two dishes that truly blew me away. I had the Blackened Mahi Mahi, and per MaryLinda’s suggestion, I paired it with their famous cottage fries—she was right on the money, as those fries were awesome. The real showstopper, however, was the Special Shrimp and Lobster Grilled Cheese. This wasn’t your average sandwich; it was a total flavor bomb, loaded with tender, sweet chunks of lobster and succulent shrimp held together by perfectly melted cheese between thick, buttery toasted bread. It was decadent, rich, and a rare coastal take on a comfort food classic.
To top off an already amazing meal, we went with their famous house-made Key Lime Pie for the big finish. It was another winner, offering the perfect balance of tart and sweet. The ultimate FOMO moment comes from driving through Key Largo and missing out on that Shrimp and Lobster Grilled Cheese and a slice of their legendary pie. This is a powerhouse of local flavor, and we will be back often.
