If you find yourself navigating the vibrant, salt-aired stretch of Duval Street, you are in luck. You are just moments away from a spot that is redefining the “island dining” experience in the heart of Key West.

Located right in the center of the action—in the iconic building that was once the former home of PinchersDoc’s on Duvall is a sanctuary of authentic flavor that Doris and I explored while preparing for our upcoming Florida Keys Special Issue. It is a total clinic in approachable, high-quality hospitality.

An Island Oasis

For me, a great meal begins the moment you cross the threshold. While Duval Street can often feel like a whirlwind of tourist fads, Doc’s feels like a genuine escape. Whether you are sitting down with the management to talk shop or tucking into a cozy table, the vibe is effortlessly welcoming—balancing that classic Key West relaxation with a professional culinary edge.

The Multi-Level Experience:

  • The Hidden Retreat: If you are looking to truly decompress, you have to check out the small Hideaway Bar downstairs. It is the perfect spot to get away from the crowds, enjoy a quiet drink, or even settle in for a cigar.
  • The Upstairs Hub: Head upstairs to find a massive, expansive bar that’s perfect for a social evening.
  • The Outdoor View: The upstairs outdoor deck is the place to be if you enjoy people-watching on Duval. It offers a fantastic vantage point to soak in the local energy while you enjoy your meal.

The SoFloDining “Must-Tries”

The Unexpected Favorite — South o’ the Border Jalapeño Poppers: These were my personal highlights. Handmade in-house, stuffed with cream cheese, and wrapped in smoky Southern bacon, they hit every mark. I don’t normally go for poppers, but I found myself fighting Doris for the last one—that says it all.

The Professional’s Pick — Mary Kate’s Crab Cakes: If you know me, you know I am incredibly tough on crab cakes; I am very partial to my own recipe. However, these were pretty damn close to what I used to make. Loaded with real crab meat and very little filler, they are exactly how a tavern-style cake should be.

The Authentic Staple — Classic Conch Fritters: You can’t visit the Keys without them, and these are a true salute to the Conch Republic. They offer a light crunch on the outside and a soft, moist center packed with conch and island flavor.

From the Pit: Meats & Sides

While the appetizers set the stage, the main fare solidifies Doc’s as a destination:

  • Carolina Gold Pulled Pork: Slow-roasted and tossed in a tangy gold BBQ sauce. It’s so flavorful I found myself wishing for just a bit more on the plate!
  • Kansas City Baby Back Ribs: Meaty, large, and glazed with honey-bourbon molasses that ensures they practically fall off the bone.
  • The “Exceptions” (The Sides): I don’t usually talk about sides, but the house-made baked beans (smoky and punchy), the perfectly seasoned collard greens, and the honey-butter topped cornbread are absolute standouts.

The “Island Delights” Beverage Program

The drink selection here moves far beyond standard tourist fare. These are crafted, one-of-a-kind expressions:

  • Key Lime Pie Martini: A delicious blend of vanilla vodka and cream of coconut with a graham cracker rim. It’s the liquid version of the island’s most famous dessert.
  • Banana Smuggler: Featuring banana rum cream and white chocolate liqueur—it’s like drinking a fresh banana.
  • The Emerging Legend: Keep an eye out for the Southern Squall. Our followers are already calling this peanut butter whiskey and ice cream creation a local legend.

Traveler’s Note: Location & Convenience

If you’re looking to escape the “fad” drinks and standard tourist stops, pull over here. It is the perfect spot to recharge while exploring the southernmost city.

  • Address: 708 Duval St, Key West, FL 33040
  • Proximity: Centrally located on the world-famous Duval Street.
  • Vibe: Authentic, high-quality, and welcoming.
  • Chef’s Tip: Don’t skip the dessert! Their Key Lime Pie—topped with a perfect, towering meringue—is something I could eat all day long.

The Verdict: In a town full of high-traffic stops, Doc’s on Duvall remains a powerhouse of quality. Next time you’re cruising the coast, make this your destination for authentic BBQ and a glass of something special. It’s not just a meal; it’s the best part of the trip!
