Back Again: An Update on Greek Islands Taverna
When you’re looking for really Greek food, just follow the crowd. Greek Islands Taverna is the place everyone talks about. We went back recently to update our review, and it’s clear this spot is still well worth the wait.
Our Recent Visit
Doris and I dropped in just after 5 p.m. on a Thursday and grabbed two seats at the bar. Our bartender and server, Simona, was on it—she greeted us right away, asked if we were eating, and got menus to us immediately.
We started with an Aperol Spritz and a Rum and Coke. Both were good, strong pours and exactly what we needed. For food:
- Appetizer: We shared the Gyros, which were a perfect start.
- The Grouper: I had the Fresh Filet of Grouper Ladoregano. It was delicious and melted in my mouth like butter. It was so flaky and moist, you could tell the fish was incredibly fresh.
- The Ribs: Doris got the Baby Back Ribs. Just like usual, they were perfection—great char, perfect seasoning, and very tender.
- Dessert: We ended the night with an order of Baklava, which, in my opinion, is the best in town.
Why It’s Still the Best
This visit just confirmed what we’ve seen before. Located near Oakland and Ocean Blvd, this place is always buzzing. You’ll usually see a line out front, but it moves quickly; we’ve been seated in under 10 minutes in the past.
The food is great every time. Whether you’re having the Lamb Chops (the most recommended dish), the Kalamaria, or the Shrimp, every plate comes back clean. Even their lunch menu is a great deal if you go during the day.
Plan Your Visit
The ultimate FOMO moment comes from seeing that long, patient line—it exists for a reason, and you’ll want to be in it. Since they don’t take reservations, it’s a good idea to get there early. They have a huge parking lot, and the service from people like Simon and Kosta is always outstanding.
Greek Islands Taverna is still a “must-visit” for us. We’ll be back again very soon!
Flashback Review: Greek Islands Taverna (2022)
Back in 2022, a Facebook poll with nearly 200 recommendations led us to the “must-visit” Greek Islands Taverna. Even with a line out the door near Oakland and Ocean Blvd, the wait was short, the atmosphere was vibrant, and our waiter, Kosta, kicked things off perfectly with fresh hummus and bread.
The Standout Menu
- Appetizers: The Pikilia dips and Kalamaria were great, but the Baby Back Ribs were the real star—literally melting like butter.
- The Icons: The Lamb Chops (char-broiled with lemon and oregano) lived up to the hype as the most-recommended dish, followed closely by the Garides Tou Sotiri (baked shrimp).
- Sweet Ending: We finished with the fan-favorite Chocolate Mousse Cake and the unique Cheesecake Baklava.
The Verdict
The “no reservations” policy means there is almost always a crowd, but with a large parking lot and efficient service, the experience is well worth the wait. Whether for their high-value lunch or a full dinner feast, the quality and authentic flavors made it an immediate local favorite.
