This restaurant is one of Lake Worth’s hidden treasures. They are a family owned and operated establishment, Jay runs the front of the house and his brother, Dak, along with his wife, Marsha, rule the kitchen. When we arrived we took advantage of the large free city parking lot just down the block. Once we entered the restaurant were graciously greeted by Jay, our host. Once we were seated we checked out the beverage menu and I was very impressed with the variety of nostalgic items that they had to offer. I have not seen a Shirley Temple on a menu since I was a child. Jay then took the time to describe each of the menu items to us as the menu changes daily which is very reminiscent of Café Maxx. The menu is small, only 8 to 10 items, but offers something for everyone. Everything on the menu is either super fresh, house made, organic and local.
We decided to order 3 entrees and share to get the full Jewell experience. First up was the Strombano which basically is the Stromboli meets The Cuban Sandwich. Incredible is all that comes to mind to describe the Strombano which rivals any Cuban sandwich that Tampa could ever put up. Next up was the Red Grouper that was just caught off Delray Beach earlier in the day. This was my first time eating Red Grouper and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked crisp yet moist, and was absolutely delicious. The accompanying couscous was a perfect flavorful match. Lastly, we had the Basic Pizza which is made with organic flour, house made sauce and freshly made mozzarella cheese to which we added garlic. The (pizza) pie was perfectly cooked and delicious. We then ordered both desserts. The Tres Leches and the Hazelnut Tart a la mode, again, two more hits.
After dinner Jay engaged us in conversation and shared memories of growing up in Hershey Pennsylvania and his involvement in local equestrian. He presented us taffy from Steel’s an Atlantic City landmark who are said to be the oldest existing original, family owned candy and fudge business in the United States, once again showing their appreciation of family.
I must tell you that there are a few ground rules at Jewell:
#1.) They are cash only but they do have an ATM on location.
#2 & 3.) No picture take or texting. You are there to enjoy your company and meal.
#4.) You will ask if there are any allergies, but substitutions are declined. “Today’s menu: Eat it or starve,” a sign on the bar says.
#5.) The burger is cooked one way – medium-rare to ensure a juicy burger. It is a 9 ounce blend of sirloin and chuck and is freshly ground.
#6.) There is no phone you have to e-mail them for reservations.
We enjoyed this place and will definitely be returning with more family and friends. I only wish that they had a place like this in my neighborhood. Lastly, I truly love the choice of the name Jewell because of the social and historical significance that it has in the area (you’ll have to look it up for yourself).
